Blog Post #233 – Paving Contractor Faces OHS Charges in Provincial Court

Blog Post #233 – Paving Contractor Faces OHS Charges in Provincial Court

Excerpt from the Government of Newfoundland’s ‘Newsroom’

The Department of Government Services announced today that Concord Paving Limited has been charged with violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations in relation to a fatal accident that occurred in May 2009. The charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch.

The incident occurred on Holyrood Access Road, and involved a flagperson who was struck by an excavator that was cleaning out the ditch beside the roadway.

The company has been charged with six violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations which relate generally to its alleged failure as an employer to provide a safe workplace, to ensure that effective means of traffic control were provided, and to ensure that workers were not exposed to the movement of heavy equipment.

My opinion

HRS Group Inc. has completed a course on ‘Traffic Control Person for Construction Work Projects.’ The course complies with the government of Ontario’s ‘Book Seven’ for traffic control, the OHSA and the appropriate sections of the ‘Construction’ regulation 213/91. We will be applying this new course to our on-line training segment and I hope everyone considering the summer job of flag person will review the information. Our further hope is to have all project supervisors employing flag persons will consider this as well. The course cost will not be set too high and should be an attractive alternative to short form in-house training. Please review and decide for yourself.

Our company blog has reached 36,000 comments. Actually, we reached that a few weeks ago, but we cannot read all of them anymore as we receive over 200 comments every day. Picture a few days off! I end up with over 600 or 700 comments waiting for editing.

If your remark has not showed up please forgive me as the weight of responsibility for the research to create the blogs, the daily editing of the comments as well as a full health and safety training schedule sometimes holds me back and I cannot be available as often as in other times. I hope you, the reader, continue to be part of our readership.
