The Workplace Safety and Health branch (WSH) of Manitoba Growth, Enterprise and Trade ministry announced August 16, 2016, that it had issued fines totalling more than $111,000 to the following six employers from March to mid-July for contravening Manitoba’s Workplace Safety and Health Act.

A worker was attempting to do a quality check on a vertical wire drawing machine. The machine was located on an elevated platform accessible by a stairway with six steps. While climbing the stairs to perform the task, the worker lost their footing. When instinctively extending their arms to brace their fall, the worker’s gloved hand came in contact with the moving wire, injuring the worker. Indwisco Limited failed to ensure the machine had a guard or other device to prevent access to the pinch points as prescribed.

Blog Post #1439 – Workplace Injury Results in $75,000 Fine for Belleville Employer

Excerpt from the government of Ontario’s ‘Newsroom’

On December 30, 2020, three workers were operating a sausage mixer at JBS Foods’ Belleville plant. The workers were operating a mixer that makes sausages. As they were emptying the contents into two-wheeled bins at the outfeed to clean the mixer, one worker reached into the discharge hole, seriously injuring themselves. JBS Foods Ontario Inc. failed to ensure the machine had a guard or other device to prevent access to the pinch points as prescribed.
