Sealed Air (Canada) CO/CIE, a Nova Scotia manufacturer of packaging products, was fined $55,000 today for a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act after a worker was injured.

Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc., of North York, was fined $350,000 for a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act after an explosion near a construction site. Precision Utility Limited, a Mississauga provider of underground pipeline location services, was fined $200,000 in relation to the same incident. In addition, Enbridge pleaded guilty to charges under sec. 9(2) of Ontario Regulation 210/91 under the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000 and was fined an additional $350,000. Furthermore, the excavator on this project, Warren Bitulithic Ltd. pleaded guilty in October of 2006 under the same regulation and was fined $225,000.

Provincial officials in Alberta have opted not to pursue charges in connection with the death of a worker last April at the Muskeg River site, then jointly operated by Shell Canada and Albian Sands Energy Inc.
Christopher Allen Vanmoorsel, 26, died at about 8 pm when a 280-tonne heavy-haul truck ran over the pick-up truck he was driving near a work site 75 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. The Caterpillar 797B is one of the largest mechanical dump trucks, measuring 10 metres wide, 14 metres long and seven metres tall when empty.
