Manitoba’s public agency for preventing workplace injury and illness is warning workers of the risks of extreme heat, both outdoors and indoors without air conditioning. Safe Work Manitoba (SWM) issued a statement on July 20, 2016, suggesting measures to keep workers safe and comfortable.

A worker employed by Otter Energy Inc. was fatally injured at the workplace while performing a task associated with the installation of solar panels at the workplace. Otter Energy Inc. failed as an employer to ensure that every reasonable precaution was taken to prevent hazards to workers from energized electrical equipment, installations, and conductors.

Goldentrust Development Inc. was the constructor for the workplace. A self-employed owner of a sub-contractor was fatally injured at the workplace when they fell approximately six meters to the bottom of an unguarded elevator shaft. Goldentrust Development Inc. failed to ensure that the opening to the elevator shaft was protected by a guardrail to prevent a worker from falling into the shaft. This is an offence under section 26.3(1) of Regulation 213/91 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
