Blog Post #966 – Updated WHMIS Takes Effect in the Yukon

OH&S Canada magazine

Yukon workplaces must comply with the updated workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, (WHMIS) regulations, which apply to workplaces were hazardous materials or use, by December 1, 2018.

Employers must provide workers with information on the safe use of hazardous products like solvents, bleach and paint through symbols, labels, information sheets, education and training.

The Yukon regulations were updated in 2015 to align with the revised federal regulations. The three-year transition. Gave suppliers of hazardous products and employers tying to put all the changes in the place.

“These updated regulations are essential to preventing workplace injuries caused by hazardous materials,” Kurt Dieckmann, Pres. and Chief Executive Officer of Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health and Safety Board in Whitehorse, says in a statement.

My opinion

Every province must have the changes in place before the end of 2018. In fact, GHS (Global Harmonized System) is going to take place soon as a possible replacement for WHMIS. Updates and training will be necessary again to understand the new system.

The GHS was put together as well because of the different systems around the world. The US has hazmat, Europe has a different system and we have ours, WHMIS. None of us are speaking the same language. With the new system in place we should have better communication from country to country and all around the world.

I remember when we miss first came into the workplace in 1987/88 time frame and there was a lot of confusion at that time about what needs to be said in the training and whether training was for everybody. As an example, my senior supervisor first gave us training as required and then photocopied the sign in sheets for up to the next 10 years. In other words, there were 10 years between my first we must lesson and my second. His attitude was why do we need training when we are in the assembly process and should be on the job. Very small minded!

Ensure your workplace is a safe place.
