Excerpt from the OH&S Canada magazine
A member of the Chilliwack RCMP in British Columbia suffered leg injuries while preventing a teenager from being hit by an out-of-control truck.
At 1:30am on February 3, 2011, Constable Jim Moir was speaking with Buffy-Anne Troy, 15, after her family truck slid off the road and into a ditch.
At that point, a sand truck descended hill lost control on the icy road, triggering a series of collisions that ended with the 45 year old Mountie being pinned between a highways vehicle and the Troy family truck. Before becoming stuck, police report the 18 year veteran picked up Troy and threw her into the ditch, preventing her from being stuck.
Moir, who suffered crushing injuries to his leg, was expected to remain off work for a number of months.
My opinion
“To Serve and Protect”. The standard police motto seems to mean more to us today after reading this report. The RCMP officer was hurt living up to the motto!
Constable Moir had the presence of mind to throw the young lady out of the way instead of getting himself out of the line of action.
My heart goes out to Constable Moir and his family. This accident is a few years old so I hope the road to recovery is now complete. I hope he has made a full recovery and is back to work looking after the community he has been assigned to protect.
Constable Jim Moir, on behalf of the Beal family, I thank you as a concerned and appreciative citizen.
