Blog Post #665 – Worker Injury Prompts Fine

Excerpt from the OH&S Canada magazine

A company in Saskatoon was fined $9100 on September 20, 2012 for violating Saskatchewan’s Occupational Health & Safety Act.

In November 2009, a worker with Lonesome Prairie Sand and Gravel was injured while granting the inside of a rock crusher cone near the Whitecap Dakota First Nation, says a statement from the provinces Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety in Regina.

The company pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that work at a place of employment is sufficiently and competently supervised and failing to ensure the hoist used to lift the cone and liner from the rock crusher was constructed and operated to perform the task safely.

My opinion

I have watched the province of Saskatchewan become a leader in health and safety. Their main focus was always on farming and Potash mining, and may still be. Mind you, construction and mining and the oil pipe lines are a very real everyday event in the focused has to shift to one of occupational health & safety. I am so happy to report concerns from the province of Saskatchewan and I know that their government is taking a hard-line approach when dealing with health and safety.

Please ensure that your province follows this type of safety culture. If it doesn’t, contact your local MPP and let them know about your concerns. All it takes is a change in attitude and we can make every worksite in Canada a safer one.
