Chrysotile asbestos has been discovered at a shutdown nickel mine near Timmins, Ontario.
Liberty Mines Inc. announced that the substance was identified in the ore body of its McWatters Mine. Additional testing and further independent analysis will be conducted to “determine the impact on the economic feasibility of restarting mine operations,” the company notes in a statement.
It will also review the conditions in other projects, including its mill. Operations at the McWatter Mine, which was running from 2009 to 2012, were put on hold due to low prices for nickel.
My opinion
The regulation 278/05 covers the Asbestos in Construction projects, and Ontario regulation 490/09 covers the designated substances, (including asbestos).
I was very satisfied to find out that a proper hazard assessment was carried out, as required by law, and the company found it necessary to make known the information to ensure compliance and then proceed to ensure proper cleanup if the bean counters felt it to be feasible.
Well done!
The workplace MUST be a safe place. If a designated substance can be found on your worksite or workplace then certain steps MUST be taken according to the Ontario safety Act and regulations. If you are not aware of the regulation then look towards Ontario regulation 490/09 – ‘Designated Substances’ and 278/05 – ‘Designated Substance’ – ‘Asbestos on Construction Projects and in Buildings and Repair Operations’ for further information.
