Report from the OH&S Canada magazine (Nov. 2015)
A recent amendment a recent amendment to the Prince Edward Island Workers Compensation Act allows for the formation and funding of safety associations, according to an announcement from the Workers Compensation Board of P.E.I. (WCB) on October 30, 2015.
The update stems from recommendations from the Legislative Review Advisory Committee in 2012, which resulted in the introduction of a provincial bill, including proposed changes to the Act in 2013. The bill became law on October 1, 2015. Intended to promote workplace safety through education and initiatives, safety associations will now be formed based on the support of the majority of employers in a sector and funded by employers through additional levy on them.
“In addition to health and safety programs, safety associations can help to promote awareness and education in accident prevention,” WCB chair Stuart Affleck says in a statement. “There are many success stories and other jurisdictions where safety associations have played a positive role in reducing workplace accidents.”
The WCB has prepared a policy on the full process of establishing and monitoring safety associations. The policy will take effect following public consultation.
There are many safety associations but a few that stick out and are sponsored by the WSIB.
- Public Services Health & Safety Association,
- Infrastructure Health & Safety Association,
- Workplace Safety North, and
- Health and Safety for Ontario Workplaces.
We have had many, many associations for a long time and then in 2010, these 4 replaced 12 separate associations such as; the IAPA, the CSAO, Municipal Health and Safety Associations and many others.
Other associations include OHCOW, Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers and the Workers Health and Safety Centre.
It was nice to see PEI finally into the light and begin to be proactive.
